This week we speak to Dr Martin Young DVM DAVCIM, who is a Board Certified Veterinary Neurologist based in Richmond, VA.

How long have you been using VETIGEL®, and in how many procedures have you used it?

"I’ve been using VETIGEL for about 3 years. I’d been looking for something flowable that wasn’t an exorbitant price. By now I have probably used it in around 100 procedures so far."

What do you like about VETIGEL®?

"I’ve been using VETIGEL® for about 18 months and have used it in around a dozen procedures so far."

What do you like about VETIGEL®?

"It’s flowable and malleable and fills the defects even if they are irregular. Powders and bone wax don’t work well for high pressure bleeds, whereas VETIGEL does. You can partially remove after initial hemostasis, and keep working in the area without bleeding restarting, so you have a clear surgical field."

Tell me about some of the procedures you’ve found benefited from the use of VETIGEL®?

"The most common procedures I have used it in are laminectomies, both hemi and dorsal. You can see the VETIGEL go between individual nerve roots when you are performing an L7 S1 dorsal laminectomy. In hemi-laminectomies the venous sinus has often been damaged by the disc, and the VETIGEL controls the hemorrhage. I’ve also used it in a handful of craniotomies, and with these the dura is not intact, but you can still use VETIGEL. One of the key benefits is that it works where you can’t fully visualize the vessel that’s bleeding."

What else can you tell me about your use of VETIGEL®?

"For the vast majority of procedures one 5ml VETIGEL syringe is more than enough. The Precision Accessories are great for getting access and delivering the VETIGEL where it’s needed.

VETIGEL has never failed to control bleeding when I’ve used it.

Although I remove excess once bleeding has been controlled, I’ve never seen any adverse reactions post-operatively."

You have clearly had a lot of experience with VETIGEL®; what other areas do you think it should be considered for?

"Would be worth exploring whether it can be used with a scope.”

Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians?

"Absolutely.”
